Planning a Farmhouse Kitchen

In my last post, I discussed my Home Goals for 2013. This post is basically my Plan of Action. I am hoping that by putting this post out there for all to read, that will help light a fire under the “old hind end”.

Currently, our kitchen looks like it belongs in 1973. It has nasty linoleum floors, fake butcher block counter tops and faux tile on a portion of the walls. Yes, I said faux tile, it’s actually a form of paneling.

Doesn’t that sound breathtaking! Not!!! It will however, be stunning when we give the “Old Girl” a "Facelift".

Here’s my inspiration.

This is Sarah Richardson’s Farmhouse Kitchen. Swoon! Sarah is my favorite designer and her Farmhouse is to die for! I do not have the same budget that she had for her kitchen, so I will have to make some changes.

We will be putting bead board panels on the bottom half of the walls. I LOVE the look that bead board gives and this will help us cover the space where the faux tile paneling once was. We currently have wallpaper above our faux tile, so I am not sure what will replace it. Honestly, I wish it were in better condition and not discolored, because I really like the pattern.  We will also be adding some open shelves using corbels as the base, Antlers and all!

We will be painting our cabinets in the same colors that Sarah used in her kitchen. Just a side note, they do not sell Sarah’s brand of paint in the US. I contacted a Para Paints dealer in Canada and they were sweet enough to sell me a paint swatch book of her line. Now all I have to do is go to my local Home Depot and have the colors matched.

As for the back splash we will be using bead board and add corbels to the ends to finish the look. Very similar to the inspiration on found on Pinterest.

The two elements that I am the most excited about are the drapes and custom “Lunch Served To-Day” sign. I knew when I started planning this project that I had to get my hands on the same fabric that Sarah used for her drapes.

With much research, I was able to figure out the name and manufacture of the fabric. I emailed the company in London and was told that they do not ship or sell this product to the US. I’m not going to lie, I was a little heartbroken. Well, I didn’t give up; I eventually found the fabric on eBay of all places. I was only able to get a little over a yard, but hey it will work.

The second element that I love is the beautiful “Lunch” sign over the quaint seating area. I have contacted one of my favorite Etsy stores to recreate this look for me. I know it’s going to be perfect.

As you can see,I will defiantly have my work cut out for me. I know in the end, I will be so much happier with my home and for that I can’t wait.  I promise to take lots of pictures of our Kitchen "Facelift".

Warmest Regards,
Rachel
